Does off-grid living provide a low carbon lifestyle?

Taking total personal responsibility for the energy consumption, and carbon footprint of your lifestyle, is critical for a sustainable future, with our currently exploding population and overcrowded cities.

Off-grid Living

Off-grid living and off grid homes could present the example to follow for the future, as they are properties that run entirely on renewable and carbon neutral energy.  Their rural locations and space mean that a large portion of food is grown at home. Good for your plate, good for your health, good for your wallet, and zero carbon cost. But even a modest sized garden can provide room enough for a decent sized veg patch and greenhouse, capable of providing a surprisingly large amount of your family’s food.

Remote Working

Working from home is common in these often-remote locations. However irrespective of location, homeworking further reduces carbon footprint by not needing to travel to work, or from the carbon cost of the office space, in which you would otherwise be working.  This can also be a positive lifestyle enhancer, as less travelling means more quality time at home and with family.

Low Cost Living

Off-grid living is not only green living, but also low-cost living, (with almost non- existent utility costs from generating all your own green energy, and gathering and processing all your water and waste needs, not to mention a reduced food bill) making a healthier work / life balance attainable, as it isn’t necessary to work as much to be financial comfortable, as your outgoings are so minimal.

Less money to live, less working required to earn money, sounds a lot like living the dream, and at the same time as offering a model for a sustainable future.

Off-grid homes present a great example to follow, whether you adopt all or some of the sustainable living techniques and technologies to your home and lifestyle. For more great information on Off-Grid living check out The Tiny Housing Co for tips on going off-grid.
